Diaries in movies: a series of close-ups

When I was little, a.k.a. in the 90s, a secret diary was kind of a fashion statement for all the girls – or at least for most of them. First of all, the covers of our diaries had to be girly enough to impress our friends. It was a celebration of flowers, stars, hearts and all the cutest pink-ish illustrations we can imagine. We used to write down every naive thought floating on our minds, decorated with popular youthful rhymes and funny sketches.

The most entertaining part was the personalization of every page with colored pens and glittery stickers. Sometimes we even spritzed our favourite fruity perfume on them – the final result was not so pleasant tough. Then technology took off and all our cute diaries soon became modern and virtual blogs. As a stationery-addict, this technological development was quite depressing, even if it ended up boosting my geeky skills. Anyway, nothing arouses my curiosity as diaries and handwriting. So here we go with a series of close-ups on diaries and journals in movies. A large variety of notes has been shown on the big screen: from the bitchy Burn Book in Mean Girls to the creepy diary of the serial killer in Seven. My favourite diary is the one belonging to Cecilia Lisbon in The Virgin Suicides, even though Susanna Kaysen in Girl, Interrupted keeps a pretty interesting journal full of disturbed notes and drawings.
